fuck everyone who made me feel like I needed to have a professional diagnosis to be autistic btw it's doing nothing for me except looming over my neck like a guillotine ready to drop at any moment

manstrans

can't even get disability benefits and my rights can be taken away at the convenience of whoever wants to treat me as subhuman what is even the fucking point

humormehorny

So I shouldn’t get the diagnosis?

manstrans

when people talk about autism diagnoses they leave out a lot of the negative impacts and risks, if it's the right thing for you then it's the right thing for you but I'd definitely look into what the benifits are for you other than just having it

I can't really think of anything positive it's really done for me except for letting me wear pajamas in high school? other than that I was still told by my mom not to go on T until I was 25 because I'm autistic so I might just be a confused little girl and harassed at my last job for being trans + disabled. I didn't need it for my anxiety meds prescription either so for me it's kinda just sitting there, menacingly. the current political climate is what has me really scared though

some of the negatives of an official autism diagnosis include:

not being allowed to foster/adopt kids
not being allowed to immigrate to a significant number of other countries
access to healthcare being taken away
greater risk of discrimination by doctors

Having an autism diagnosis can help if you are high support needs and need access to things like a group home for autistics or some sort of other aid from the government (but even then just because you have the diagnosis doesn't mean you'll get that help), but for middle support needs and low support needs it's a much more nebulous thing.

I can't find it now but I think someone left tags on this along the lines of "and self diagnosing is more reliable if you're black and percieved as a woman" and I didn't even think about that bc this started as just a little vent post but it's so true. the flip side of "I got an autism diagnosis that hasn't done anything for me and may actively harm me because I was convinced I needed one to consider myself autistic" where you can't reliably get diagnosed because doctors are shit-heads could mean that the self-actualization is just unobtainable and that sounds so horrific

also worth noting that while both "I regret my diagnosis because I felt pressured into it" and "I feel pressured into a diagnosis that's very difficult to obtain because of biases" can be eased by removing said pressure, some autistic people do still need the diagnosis to obtain certain vital accommodations!

and also, even though my diagnosis feels like a burden, I want to acknowledge that the ability to get it in the first place is a privilege. there are so many people who just aren't able to get one whether or not they need it! and it's unfair! and there's so much nuance to the conversation around diagnosis! and we all need to fight for people who can't get diagnosed too!

manstrans

ALSO! I forgot to look it up first, I should have, but autistic people aren't automatically barred from adoption, at least in the US! I'm not sure if there are countries where that's true, but I can't find anything about it online. BUT a diagnosis shouldn't stop you from adopting

Asexuals were always part of pride and it really fucking shows when people think it's a recent term.

hungry-skeleton

Although not going by the term "asexual" yet, asexuality was spoken about alongside homosexuality as far back as the 1890s. Asexual history is just as vital to queer history as any other term and I'm so tired of watching us being treated like a new thing

For those with homes built to keep heat in, not let it out: aluminum foil your windows, shiny side out. Cover the window, tape up the sides, maybe tape cardboard behind it to help insulate from the heat outside and absorb heat that gets through the foil.

Love, a former Californian, whose had to keep houses cool without any electricity.

P.S. this is a method endorsed by FEMA and the Department of Energy, so if you need more than anecdotal evidence, there ya go.

I do this up in the PNW and it really helps during heat waves. So much.
